Writing

The editor

Write, format and publish in an editor that saves as you type.

The editor is where the writing happens. It looks a lot like the finished post: a cover image, the title, then your text, set in the same typeface your readers see. No clutter, no save button, just you and the words.

A tour of the page#

From top to bottom:

  • The header. A Documents link back to the list, the save state, the status menu, the details toggle and the publish button.
  • The cover image, if the document has one. See images.
  • A meta line with the category, the word count, and which AI agent edited last, when one did.
  • The title. Press Enter in the title to jump to the body.
  • The body, where you write.

A brand-new, empty document says "Start writing, or mark the brief ready for someone to draft it." Either works. See briefs and ideas for the second one.

Saving#

PMKIN saves as you type. Keep an eye on the header if you're curious:

You see What's happening
Saving… Your latest changes are on their way.
Offline You lost your connection. Keep going and keep the tab open; PMKIN keeps trying and saves when you're back.
Not saved A save failed. PMKIN keeps trying. If it doesn't clear, check your connection and keep the tab open.
Saving paused Someone else changed the document at the same time. See below.

When someone else edits too#

If a teammate, or an agent, changes the document while you have unsaved text, saving pauses and a banner explains who changed it. Pick one:

  • Load their version to continue from their changes.
  • Keep mine to save yours on top.

Note: Either way nothing is lost. The other version stays in the document's history, so you can restore it later. See revisions and history.

Formatting#

Select some text and a toolbar appears next to it. Use it to:

  • turn the line into Text, Heading 2, Heading 3, Heading 4, a Bulleted List, a Numbered List or Code,
  • make text bold, italic, struck through or code,
  • add a link: paste or type the URL, and click away to save it.

Prefer typing? Markdown works as you type, so ## starts a heading and - starts a list. Markdown and formatting lists every shortcut.

Keyboard shortcuts#

On Windows and Linux, use Ctrl instead of ⌘.

Shortcut Does
⌘B Bold
⌘I Italic
⌘⇧X Strikethrough
⌘E Inline code
⌘⇧E Code block
⌘K Add or edit a link
Alt+1 Text
Alt+2, Alt+3, Alt+4 Heading 2, 3 or 4

The details panel#

Choose the panel icon in the header (Toggle details) to open the document's details. On a phone it slides up as a sheet. In it you'll find:

  • Status, Assignee, Category, Cluster, and a Due date. Once a document is scheduled or published, the date becomes its Publish date.
  • Search & sharing: the Slug, the Meta title and the Meta description, with a counter that helps you stay under 160 characters. Leave the slug empty and PMKIN makes one from the title when you publish.
  • Brief: a summary of the brief with Open, or Add brief when there isn't one.
  • Cover image.
  • More: the Subtitle and the Excerpt, a short summary for lists of posts.
  • Activity, with a History button for earlier versions.

Publishing from the editor#

The button in the top-right corner changes with the document:

  • Publish puts it live. The arrow next to it has Schedule….
  • Publish changes appears when a published document has edits your readers haven't seen yet.
  • Scheduled opens a menu to Change publish date…, Publish now or Unschedule.
  • Published opens a menu to Unpublish.

Tip: Outside the text, ⌘K opens a menu to jump to another document or start a new one. Inside the text it adds a link.
