Scheduling and publishing
Put documents live now or later, and take them down when you need to.
Publishing puts a document on your website. Scheduling does the same, just later, while you're off doing something else. Here's how both work, and how to take a page down again.
Draft and published#
Every document keeps two copies of its content:
- The draft is what you edit in PMKIN.
- The published version is what your website shows.
Editing a published document only changes the draft. Your readers keep seeing the published version until you publish again, so you can work on an update in peace.
Unpublished changes#
When a published document has edits that aren't live yet, the editor's main button reads Publish changes instead of Published. That's your sign there's something waiting to go out.
Publish a document#
- Open the document and check that it has a title and a slug. You can set the slug in the details panel.
- Choose Publish in the editor header. For a published document with edits, choose Publish changes.
You'll see "Published" with "The document is live on your website." From the board, drag a card to Published and choose Publish now.
Note: Publishing, scheduling and approving all need a title and a slug. An idea needs a plan first: move it to Planned or Drafting before you publish it.
Schedule a document#
- Open the arrow next to Publish and choose Schedule….
- Pick a publish date and time in the future.
- Choose Schedule.
The document moves to Scheduled and goes live at that time. You can also drag a card to Scheduled on the board, or drag a scheduled document to another day on the calendar.
Warning: Scheduling saves the draft as it is right now. Edits you make after scheduling wait until you publish them.
Change or cancel a schedule#
Choose Scheduled in the editor header for these options:
- Change publish date… picks a new time.
- Publish now skips the wait.
- Unschedule cancels it and moves the document back to Drafting.
If a scheduled publish fails#
PMKIN checks for due documents every minute. If a document can't ever be published, for example because its title or slug was removed, it moves back to Drafting instead of retrying forever. Fix what's missing and schedule it again.
Unpublish a document#
- Choose Published in the editor header.
- Choose Unpublish.
- Confirm in the "Unpublish this document?" dialog.
The document comes off your website and moves back to Drafting. Its content stays in PMKIN, so you can publish it again any time. Unpublishing a scheduled document cancels its schedule too.
Change the publish date readers see#
For a published document, the details panel shows a Publish date. Change it to set the date your website shows, for example when you move an older post into PMKIN.
